"We're not just selling a product . We're offering a lifestyle." Those words are an everyday credo for Dick Fowlkes, Ed Cleavenger and his staff at Peter-Blair, the men's fine clothing and accessory store at 5718 Grove Avenue in Richmond, Virginia. Ed Cleavenger was president of Jack Henry Clothing Co. in Kansas City, MO from 1982 - 1989. Jack Henry was one of the leading Men's and Women's Specialty Stores in the mid west. Dick opened the store back in 1993 with a goal of bringing a style he calls "conservative with a twist" to his hometown. In fact, the offerings you'll find at Peter-Blair are a direct reflection of Dick's own personality: classic, comfortable, elegant, carefree… and fun.
Service still reigns at Peter-Blair, and Dick and Ed insist on getting to know each potential customer before completing a sale. The focus is on every shopper, where that individual's life is now and where it might be five years from now. In other words, says Dick, "I want people to leave feeling good about themselves and their purchase."
When Dick's not manning the store, you might find him teaching a cooking class, painting or getting involved with the community. He's an active member of the Richmond community, and customers often seek his advice on everything from fashion to current events.
…With a Twist
So… if Dick Fowlkes is the founder and co-owner at Peter-Blair…then who is Peter-Blair? In a stroke of playfulness that his friends and family members know well, Dick named his store for two of his godchildren, Peter Sisk and Blair Northen. Now, more than a decade later, Peter-Blair's loyal customers come back not only to update and upgrade their wardrobes, but also to visit Dick and Ed.
